Free Trials and Tire Kickers – Marco.org →
Browsing the App Store and getting new apps, often spending a few bucks along the way, is a form of casual entertainment for a lot of people. This role used to be filled by movies and music. Today, it’s filled by browsing the internet and playing with mobile apps. Usually, they’re games, but not always — modern mainstream culture, especially among younger people, seems to be more interested in...

Charles Moore: David Cameron would like to forget... →
Charles Moore seems to be the perfect storm of right-wing, religious opinion According to the “public sector equality duty”, all acts and institutions of government must enforce Equality in all its various “strands”. (There are seven of them, and “gender reassignment” is given the same status as “religion”.) So if same-sex marriage is permitted by law, opposition to it will become a form of...

Steve Jobs' Lost Interview Converts Me From Hater... →
Normally I caution entrepreneurs not to model themselves after Steve Jobs […] But my aversion to his popularity prevented me—until the other week—from hearing these statements, which resonate with my values. This article could also have been titled ‘Idiot realises he is an idiot’. He’s essentially saying: ‘Despite never having bothered to find out how one of the...

Nokia Lumia 925: our latest innovations in imaging... →
Today we announce the Nokia Lumia 925, bringing together the best in low light imaging, a smarter camera and a beautiful new look. The Nokia Lumia 925 comes with a sleek, metal-finished design, a new AMOLED display… I think Nokia just nailed it… if only it were running Android.

Should Nokia switch to Android, or is too late? →
Nokia shareholders tell Stephen Elop to “find a new road.” Should this road lead to Android or is it too late? I would buy an Android powered Nokia Lumia in a heartbeat. They should have gone with Android. I really enjoy Windows Phone, but it just isn’t the OS to bet the future of the company on.

Cult of Mac regurgitates the good, as well as the... →
This is the kind of analysis Cult of Mac should be providing, rather than the regurgitation of incorrect news pieces offered by Killian Bell. HOWEVER, it is still regurgitation: Alex’s article is based on legwork done and reported by others (Fortune, in this case). I would also note that it is written to correct/expand upon a CoM article by John Brownlee that itself regurgitates an...

Cult of Mac going rapidly down hill
The writing over at Cult of Mac is getting decidedly dodgy. I say writing, I mean the near-verbatim regurgitation of New York Times and Reuters articles. This one, from Killian Bell, really annoyed me today. It’s lifted from this New York Times piece (which is significantly better). I posted the following to the article’s comments thread, and I copy it here for posterity on my own...

The sounds of Skype
I’m such a nerd… I had a dream that Microsoft changed the classic ringtone and other sounds from Skype to crappy Microsoft sounds… and I was VERY upset. I need help…

So disappointed by www.tardis.com
I looked www.tardis.com up on a whim. It’s some kind of german high-tech glass designer/manufacturer. There isn’t even a nod to Dr. Who. They’re based 1 hour 45 minutes from Heidelberg. I might have to drive over and chat to their web people to see if they’ll include some Dr. Who ‘easter eggs’.

You can't have our toys - nuclear weapons and...
Just so we’re on the same page. The USA (has nuclear weapons) and China (has nuclear weapons) and Japan (could construct nuclear weapons within months if it felt inclined to) all agree that North Korea can only have peace on the precondition that it doesn’t develop the same toys the other three can play with. Seems fair… North Korea is playing a dangerous and silly game, but...

The kids who I identify with, at least who behave how I guess I might have, are the ones who try just a little tiny bit… to satisfy the temptation but not get caught. I don’t know about you, but I’ve a feeling that idea never goes away, even in the most sensible and composed of adults. That pernicious little sentence that begins in your head with ‘what if I...

Competitors launch European antitrust complaint... →
Oh, I’m sorry, are Google kicking your asses in the mobile space? Boo hoo. Don’t Microsoft/Nokia devices also come with their own apps loaded front and center? (Apple aren’t a part of this filing because they’re far too smart and competitive - as in they can actually compete - to do something so pathetically weak, spineless and hypocritical).

Dancing on graves
The death of Magaret Thatcher has proven rather more interesting to me than I had assumed (though to be honest, I hadn’t given it much thought). There’s been a lot of waffle about how important and influential she was; about how she rescued Britain from the economic doldrums of the 70s; about how she was a woman who fought her way to the top of a man’s world; about how deftly she...
